Do you have your data backed up?

This is a reminder that it is critically important to ensure you have your work backed up and have the latest in virus protection running, even at home.

  • Hard disks crash very often, sometimes with no warning
  • Machines get stolen, including from locked areas (see news article)
  • USB keys get lost
  • Data becomes corrupted
  • Vulnerabilities (from an external source) may affect you

There are quite a few cases each year where research is lost due to inadequate backups or lack of virus protection (especially where many laptops are used off campus).

Ensure for your own piece of mind that you back up your data frequently, at least weekly and certainly at the end of every step that can not be repeated. Keep your backups secure on various media and in different places.

Please contact Science IT support if you would like advice on a backup solution.

Incidents in the past have included totally lost thesis' and the accompanying research data.

DO NOT PLACE YOUR DATA OR THE UNIVERSITY'S DATA AT RISK..
