Personal Web Pages

Staff can apply for an SNG account (Log a job through JobDesk) which allows you to publish a website on the Monash University server. You must also read the relevant Policies for use of IT at Monash before setting up a page on Monash Servers.

It will take a day to process the account in the system. At least the day after your account has been created you will need to change the password.

Password Change

  • Wait at least one day after you are informed that your SNG account has been created
  • Go to the page: https://mdsadmin.monash.edu.au/cgi-bin/changepwdhosts
  • Deselect the checkboxes for AuthCate and Novell (otherwise your AuthCate and Novell password will be changed)
  • Ensure the checkbox SNG is selected.
  • Fill in form with your current AuthCate password at the top
  • Enter the new password for your SNG account into the other 2 boxes and submit the form

Setup Page

To then use the system you will need to:

  • Login to SNG via sng.its.monash.edu.au using a telnet/SSH client (such as PuTTY)
  • Configure your account before adding your web content.
    1. Access your AFS home folder. If you are logged into Linux in a lab, you already have access. If not, connect to ra-clay, or sng using SSH before going on to the next step.
    2. Type home.page.setup at the prompt. It will automatically create a WWW folder (if you do not have one) and set the permissions so that everyone can view your website. Use home.page.setup again at any time to fix your website.
    3. Check the web server software configuration (Authcate restricted).
    4. Hint: If home.page.setup is not in your path, use /afs/monash/pack/cflabs/master/usr/local/etc/home_page_setup.sh instead.

  • Connect to SNG (HostName/Address: sng.its.monash.edu.au) using an ftp client to transfer files (such as WS_FTP)
note: you will need to use passive transfer mode

The url of your new page will be http://users.monash.edu.au/~your-username/
