Printer PurchasingIntroductionPrinting within the faculty costs several thousand dollars per month (2009 figures). The faculty aims to reduce this cost where possible by selecting printers and printing capable devices with a low or "best value" cost per page and by implementing some default settings within our IT Standard Operating Environment (SOE). Globally, printing has a significant environmental impact. Monash Unviersity has committed to reducing its impact on the environment and has included duplex printing by default as one of the points in it's Green Office program 10 point plan. The Faculty of Science has taken the University's committment one step further and requires all printers purchased by the faculty to be fitted with an auto duplex printing unit. The faculty is implementing the following actions to further assist with cost reduction and to lessen the environmental impact of printing:
All users are encouraged to print to common access printers and Multi Function Devices (MFDs) within their schools. Most Science schools have several common access printers or MFDs available and are phasing out individual and low-volume printers. MFDs and common access printers generally have the lowest cost per page and print at high speeds. The purchase of individual printers may require approval from your Head of School. Available ModelsThe following printer models are available for purchase. Purchases must be via Purchase Order, as outlined in the IT Purchasing Guidelines. Individual purchaseWhilst the faculty does not recommend individual printers (non-networked), the following model is approved:HP Laserjet P2055d (30ppm Black, 128mb ram, Auto Duplex, 300 sheet capacity, optional tray, 3 year warranty) $640 ex gst Networked printers (Group/Shared purchase)BlackHP Laserjet P3005dn (33ppm Black, 128mb ram, Auto Duplex, Networking, 600 sheet capacity, optional tray, duty cycle: 100,000 pages/mth, 4 year warranty) $1560 ex gst HP Laserjet P3005dn (33ppm Black, 128mb ram, Auto Duplex, Networking, 600 sheet capacity, optional tray, duty cycle: 100,000 pages/mth, 5 year warranty) $1620 ex gst HP Laserjet P4515dn (60ppm Black, 128mb ram, Auto Duplex, Networking, 600 sheet capacity, optional tray, duty cycle: 275,000 pages/mth, 5 year warranty) $2910 ex gst ColourHP Laserjet CP2025dn (20ppm Black & Colour, 128mb ram, Auto Duplex, Networking, 300 sheet capacity, optional tray, duty cycle: 40,000 pages/mth, 3 year warranty) $1050 ex gst HP Laserjet CP3525dn (30ppm Black & Colour, 384mb ram, Auto Duplex, Networking, 350 sheet capacity, optional tray, duty cycle: 75,000 pages/mth, 5 year warranty) $1770 ex gst Multifunction devicesHP Laserjet M2727nf (26ppm Black, Print/Scan/Copy with ADF, 64mb ram, Auto Duplex, Networking, 300 sheet capacity, optional tray, duty cycle: 15,000 pages/mth, 3 year warranty) $1030 ex gst HP Laserjet CM2320fxi (20ppm Black & Colour, Print/Scan/Copy with ADF, 160mb ram, Auto Duplex, Networking, 550 sheet capacity, optional tray, photocard slot, duty cycle: 40,000 pages/mth, 3 year warranty) $1750 ex gst HP Laserjet M3035 (33ppm Black, Print/Scan/Copy with ADF, 256mb ram, Auto Duplex, Networking, 600 sheet capacity, optional tray, duty cycle: 75,000 pages/mth, 3 year warranty) $2620 ex gst HP Laserjet M3530 (30ppm Black & Colour, Print/Scan/Copy with ADF, 512mb ram, Auto Duplex, Networking, 350 sheet capacity, optional tray, duty cycle: 75,000 pages/mth, 4 year warranty) $3050 ex gst NotesThe models listed are business grade laser printers. Business grade printers have significant benefit over consumer based printers, generally the benefits are: lower cost per page; higher monthly duty cycle; better build quality; better compatibility; network capability; duplex capability and longevity of printing supplies. Overall, business grade printers represent better value despite what can appear as a slightly higher inital price tag. The faculty requires a minimum extended warranty to be taken out for these devices (generally between 3 and 5 years, depending on the expected life of the printer). The minimum cost of a single non-warranty call is $80 call out + parts (~$35-$200), as a result a printer warranty cost of ~$180 for 2 or more years is easily justified. Inkjet PrintersInkjet printers represent a higher cost per page than laser printers. Inkjet printers should only be purchased after seeking the approval of your Head of School and the Team Leader - Workstation Support. Users purchasing an Inkjet printer will require a documented business case stating in as much detail as possible, the need for photographic, photo or other ink based printing facilities.
