Adding and removing Printers in OS X

Click on the System Preferences icon in the Dock or choose it from the Apple logo menu in the top left corner of the screen.

In System Preferences menu, select the Print and Fax option from the Hardware sub area (see below)

Modifying Printers

In the Print and Fax window, click on the “+” symbol to add a new printer

Modifying Printers

Usually the first window that appears is the one below. Some network printers in Maths or Chemistry can be identified easily here. To add a printer, highlight the printer you want to add in the Printer Name area and then click on Add.

If you can not find the printer you want in this window, click on the IP icon in the toolbar

Modifying Printers

For non HP printers, make sure the Protocol is set to  LPD. For HP printers, make sure the protocol is set to HP Jetdirect.

Modifying Printers

In the above window is a partially complete entry for a HP Laserjet printer.

Once you have selected the protocol to suit the model of printer, type the IP address for the printer into the Address field. Leave the Queue field empty.
In the Name field, you can change the IP address to whatever the model name of the printer is, or where its location is. This information is shown in the main window Print and Fax window. The Location field can be left empty.

With some printers, the driver is automatically found, as shown in the Print Using field. However if OSX does not recognise the printer, you will need to click on the double arrowhead at the end of the field and select from the drop down menu Select a driver to use. You can type in the model name of the printer in the search field, and it should appear. If it doesn’t, please contact IT Support.

Once the fields are filled out, click on the Add button to add the printer to the system.

Removing a printer

As with adding a printer to the system, go to System Preferences and select the Print and Fax option.

Modifying Printers

Highlight the printer you want to remove in the printers list on left side bar (for example, the 130.194.165.240 printer shown above), then click on the “-“ button to remove it.
