Monash Science one of the top 50 science universities

Monash Science has been ranked 39th among the world’s top 100 science institutions in the World University Rankings 2005 published by the UK’s Times Higher Education Supplement (THES)

The annual ranking is based on a survey of 2375 academics around the world on the following measures:
  • Peer review (40%)
  • The number of times research is cited by other academics (20%)
  • International attractiveness to staff (5%)
  • International attractiveness to students (5%)
  • Faculty/student ratios (20%)
  • Recruiter review or top employers’ opinions (10 %)
  The sciences covered were:

  • Micro-biology
  • Agriculture
  • Environment and ecology
  • Mathematics
  • Materials
  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Space science
  • Geoscience

Increasing its 2004 position by moving up two places, Monash came in ahead of John Hopkins University, McGill University and the University of California, San Diego. 

Monash Science ranked fourth highest of the Australian universities, behind the Australian National University (13), the University of Melbourne (32) and the University of Sydney (37).

Monash is a member of the prestigious Group of Eight (Go8) universities, recognised for excellence in teaching, learning, research and graduate outcomes.  The Go8 undertakes 70 per cent of all research conducted in Australian universities and more than half of all basic research conducted throughout Australia.

  Bayden Wood
Dr Bayden Wood, a researcher at Monash's Centre for Biospectroscopy, uses synchrotron infrared light to conduct research into the chemical components of individual pre-cancerous cells in humans, research that could be used to develop a new diagnostic tool for cervical cancer.
