The event will be on Wednesday 20th August, in Building 25 Clayton Campus. This evening event will incorporate speakers from industry and academia and is a must for any student graduating and considering their future directions. More information including a full format for the evening will be available closer to the date. For more information about the services available from Employment and Career Development please visit their web site at http://www.careers.monash.edu.au/news/science-industry-night.html The Challenge is on for Melbourne Maths StudentsOver 1200 Victorian schools will be vying for spots in the 24®Challenge Maths Tournaments to be held at various venues across Melbourne during National Literacy and Numeracy Week in September. Schools will be sending two participants from Years 3 to 8 to participate in this inaugural event. Despite its amazing success overseas, with more than five million students having participated, this is the first time that the 24® Challenge has been run in Australia. Monash University will host the Eastern and Southern region Tournaments whilst the Western region tournament will be held at Scienceworks, and the Northern region at Darebin Arts and Entertainment Centre. They will be run across four consecutive days from the 2nd to the 5th September. The 24® Game operates on a very simple premise: the answer is always 24 - hence the name. The challenge lies in the way in which the numbers are manipulated to achieve the answer! Utilising addition, subtraction, multiplication or division, students must find the answer using each of the four numbers provided (although each number can be used only once). The 24® Game challenges students to think flexibly, look for patterns and build their repertoire of number facts – all within the structure of a game! The Tournaments are a key event for schools in Victoria during National Literacy and Numeracy Week made possible through generous sponsorship from the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development and Brainy Days providers of games and toys to challenge and extend young minds. The tournaments will work towards building Australian student’s capacity in maths, where according to the recent TMISS data, Year 4 Australian students ranked 16th and Year 8 Australian students 14th of the 25 countries tested. Comedian Damian Callanan will kick off the week of fun at 10.30am on Tuesday the 2nd of September at Scienceworks for what is sure to be pure maths fun! Further information
