Each school is an AOU.ACESS: see 'Australian Computational Earth Systems Simulator'. ACGR: see ‘Australian Competitive Grants Register’. ACSPRI: see 'Australian Consortium for Social and Political Research Inc.' ADGS: see 'Associate Dean (Graduate Studies)'. ADR: see 'Associate Dean (Research)'. Advanced standing: the recognition by the faculty of prior studies undertaken that may satisfy part of the academic requirements of a course in which the student is enrolled, for example the Graduate Diploma in Science (GradDipSc). AEC: see 'Animal Ethics Committee'. AINSE: see ‘Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering’. Amenities fee: an annual fee that all enrolled students pay, billed in semesters one and two. The rate differs according to enrolment status and the campus of enrolment. For example, the amenities fee for a full-time postgraduate research student enrolled at the Clayton campus in 2006 is $466.20. Animal ethics: Any person at Monash University who wishes to use animals in research or teaching must first obtain approval from their school Animal Ethics Committee (AEC). Only after approval by their AEC the project may commence. Animal Ethics Committee (AEC): a committee at the school level that must approve each submission asking for permission to use animals in research and teaching, before the project may commence. See 'animal ethics'. Annual Progress Report (APR): a report that provides a postgraduate research student, his or her supervisor(s), and the head of the school (or nominated representative) an opportunity to review the progress of the student. The Monash Research Graduate School (MRGS) requires Annual Progress Reports for doctoral candidates while the Faculty of Science coordinates progress reporting for masters by research candidates. ANSTO: see ‘Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation’. AOU: see 'Academic Organisational Unit'. APA: see 'Australian Postgraduate Award'. APA(I): see 'Australian Postgraduate Award (Industry)'. APR: see 'Annual Progress Report'. ARC: see 'Australian Research Council'. Arts and Sciences: see 'School of Arts and Sciences'. Associate Dean (Graduate Studies): an academic staff member of the faculty who coordinates postgraduate courses in the faculty, convenes the 'Research Degrees Committee', and is the faculty representative on the Research Graduate School Committee (RGSC). Associate Dean (Research): an academic staff member of the faculty who coordinates the research output of the faculty, convenes the 'Faculty Research Committee', and is the faculty representative on the ‘Monash University Research Committee (MRC)’. Associate supervisor: see 'Supervisor'. Australian Centre for Biodiversity Analysis, Policy and Management: a research centre of the Faculty of Science based in the School of Biological Sciences. Australian Competitive Grants Register (ACGR): a list of ‘Category 1’ research grant schemes maintained by the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST). Such schemes must be nationally competitive and for research only; available for allocation throughout Australia; and the budget for the scheme must be at least $200,000 for the most recent year. DEST uses ‘Category 1’ funding data to assist in the calculation of ‘Research infrastructure Block Grants (RIBG)’ to higher education providers (HEP). In this regard the ACGR data used is averaged over the two most recent years. Grants are calculated annually. Australian Computational Earth Systems Simulator (ACESS) (pronounced "access"): one of 15 new national research facilities being established under the Australian Government's Major National Research Facilities program. Australian Consortium for Social and Political Research Inc (ACSPRI): a national organisation of member institutions who aim to facilitate access to Australian and overseas sources of computer-readable social science data. Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering (AINSE): an organisation established in 1958 to provide a mechanism for access to the special facilities at Lucas Heights by universities and other tertiary institutions and to provide a focus for cooperation in the nuclear scientific and engineering fields. It has a specific mandate to arrange for the training of scientific research workers and the award of scientific research studentships in matters associated with nuclear science and engineering. Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO): Australia 's national nuclear research and development organisation and the centre of Australian nuclear expertise. Australian Postgraduate Award (APA): an award offered by the Australian Government to Australian citizens and to permanent residents. It provides a yearly non-taxable stipend of $19,231 in 2006. Australian Postgraduate Award (Industry) (APA(I)): an award offered by the Australian Government to Australian citizens and to permanent residents to prepare high calibre researchers for industry research. Two main types of students are targeted: recent graduates interested in industry research and research personnel from industry upgrading their research skills. The awards carry a non-taxable stipend of $A23,886 (2004) plus allowances. Australian Research Council (ARC): a body that is the primary source of advice to the Australian Government on investment in national research, and administers a number of research funding schemes including ARC Discovery-Projects, ARC Linkage-Projects, ARC Linkage-Infrastructure Equipment and Facilities (LIEF), and ARC Federation Fellowships. A range of grants offered by the ARC are listed on the Research Office website in Grant Schemes. Automatic H1 Equivalence: Graduates from selected overseas institutions may be eligible for automatic H1 equivalence. See 'H1' and 'H1 Equivalence'. For example, Bachelor of Science (BSc). Backing Australia's Ability - Building Our Future Through Science and Innovation: a strategy of the Australian Government to promote innovation, especially in research, science and technology. BDM: see 'Business Development Manager'. Biological Sciences : see 'School of Biological Sciences'. BTI Australia: the former name of ‘HRG Australia’. Bridging research grants: see ‘Faculty of Science Bridging Research Grants’. Business Development Manager (BDM): an employee of the faculty facilitating co-operative business relationships and building capacity within the university, and to identify, evaluate and take advantage of opportunities for business development offshore. Callista: the electronic student database system used by Monash University. Campus: the physical location from where a program of study is being delivered. Monash University has six campuses in Australia (Berwick, Caulfield, Clayton, Gippsland, Parkville, and Peninsula) plus one in Malaysia and one in South Africa, and centres in London ( England) and Prato in Italy. Candidate: a person enrolled in a 'higher degree by research' program. The term is synonymous with 'postgraduate student'. Careers and employment: see 'Monash University Careers and Employment:'. Category 1 research: research is that which is conducted under a grant listed on the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) ‘Australian Competitive Grants Register (ACGR)’. CDMO: see 'Centre for Dynamical Meteorology and Oceanography'. CeLTS: see 'Centre for Learning and Teaching Support'. Centrally allocated scholarship: a scholarship awarded by the university as part of a central round such as Monash University Postgraduate Research Scholarships. Centre for Biospectroscopy: a research centre of the Faculty of Science based in the School of Biological Sciences and the School of Chemistry. Centre for Dynamical Meteorology and Oceanography (CDMO): a research centre of the Faculty of Science based in the School of Mathematical Sciences. Centre for Environmental Stress and Adaptation (CESAR): a research centre of the Faculty of Science based in the School of Biological Science. Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science: a research centre with Faculty of Science involvement. Centre for Green Chemistry: a research centre of the Faculty of Science based in the School of Chemistry. Centre for Learning and Teaching Support (CeLTS): an organisational unit of the university that provides services to distance education students, coordinates the Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (GCHE), and offers a range of workshops to both students and staff. Centre for Modelling of Stochastic Systems (CMSS): a cross-faculty research centre based in the School of Mathematical Sciences and the Department of Econometrics and Business Statistics in the Faculty of Business and Economics. Centre for Stellar and Planetary Astrophysics (CSPA): a research centre of the Faculty of Science based in the School of Mathematical Sciences. CESAR: see 'Centre for Environmental Stress and Adaptation'. CGM: see 'Committee on Graduate Matters'. Chemistry : see 'School of Chemistry'. Clayton campus: the largest of the university's seven campuses, located approximately 20 kilometres south-east of Melbourne's central business district. CMSS: see 'Centre for Modelling of Stochastic Systems'. CO2 CRC: see 'CRC for Greenhouse Gas Technologies'. Co-joint supervisor: see 'Supervisor'. Committee of Associate Deans, Research (CADRES): the former name of the ‘Monash University Research Committee (MRC)’. Committee on Graduate Matters (CGM): the former name of the 'Research Degrees Committee'. Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO): a national scientific global research organisation focussed on providing new ways to improve the economic and social performance of a number of industry sectors through research and development. Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP): a higher education place for which the federal government (the Commonwealth of Australia) makes a contribution towards the cost of a student's education under the 'Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS)'. Community of Science (CoS): an online global database of research funding opportunities of which Monash University is a member. Compass: the annual handbook of the Monash Postgraduate Association (MPA). Confirmation of candidature: All probationary 'PhD' candidates are required to present their work in progress to a review panel and submit a confirmation of candidature report at the end of their probationary period. Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) Programme: a program administered by the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) that seeks to promote the importance of collaborative arrangements to maximise the benefits of research through an enhanced process of utilisation, commercialisation and technology transfer. Corporate Finance Division: see ‘Monash University Corporate Finance Division’. CoS: see ‘Community of Science’. Cotutelle and joint / double badged PhD programs: an agreement between Monash University and another overseas university whereby the candidature of a doctoral student is conducted under joint supervision and enrolment arrangements of the 'home' and 'partner' university. The student receives a doctoral degree from each of the two participating institutions, with the student's testamur and official academic record stating that the degree was obtained under a cotutelle agreement. Course code: a four digit code that identifies a course offered by Monash University. For example, the course code for Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) offered in the Faculty of Science is 0057. Course Tuition fee: a fee charged to international students. CRC: see 'Cooperative Research Centres Programme'. CRC for Clean Power from Lignite: a CRC with Faculty of Science involvement based in the School of Chemistry. CRC for Greenhouse Gas Technologies (CO2 CRC): a CRC with Faculty of Science involvement based in the School of Chemistry. CRC for Predictive Mineral Deposits (pmd*crc): a CRC with Faculty of Science involvement based in the School of Geosciences. Credit and credit grade average: the Monash University Grading Scale defines the grade of 'Credit' as corresponding to a level of achievement for which a mark between 60 and 69 per cent has been awarded for a coursework unit. A 'credit grade average' would correspond to an average mark of 60 per cent or more for coursework units. Credit points: the number of points assigned to a unit in a course that acts as an indicator of the amount of work required in that unit. Credit points are used in the calculation of the amount of HECS or fees for which students are liable. Faculty of Science units are normally allocated 6 credit points. CRICOS (Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students): a register maintained by the 'Department of Education, Science and Training' of providers of courses to international students, and courses themselves. Each provider is given a CRICOS number and each program offered by the provider has to be registered with a corresponding code before it can be marketed or offered to international students. The CRICOS Provider number for Monash University is 00008C. CSIRO: see 'Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation'. CSP: see 'Commonwealth Supported Place'. CSPA: see 'Centre for Stellar and Planetary Astrophysics'. The dean oversees all operations of the faculty and convenes meetings of 'Faculty Board'. Dean's Research Initiative (DRI): a Faculty of Science scheme that provides funding for up to three years to support a strategic new research initiative. Dean's Scholarship: see ‘Faculty of Science Dean's Postgraduate Research Scholarship’. Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research): a senior member of the university staff whose responsibilities include identifying and supporting the university's main research strengths, improving the university's research infrastructure, ensuring that Monash staff are research-active, and improving the efficiency with which the university's existing research funding is used. Department of Education Science and Training (DEST): a department of the Australian Government that oversees tertiary education in Australia and aims to enhance Australia's scientific research and innovation capability. Formerly known as the Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs (DETYA). Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT): a department of the Australian Government that aims to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. DFAT operates the ‘Smart Traveller’ service for Australians undertaking international travel. DEST: see 'Department of Education Science and Training'. DFAT: see ‘Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’. Discipline: an approved sequence of units in related areas. For example, applicants seeking admission to the course Graduate Diploma in Science (GradDipSc) are required to select a ‘major sequence’ in a discipline offered by the faculty. Discovery-Projects: see 'Australian Research Council (ARC)'. Distance eduction: see ‘Off-campus distributed learning’. Distributed learning: see ‘Off-campus distributed learning’. Doctoral Completion Scholarship (DCS): a scheme offered by the Monash Research Graduate School (MRGS) that is intended to support students whose likelihood of submission will be significantly increased being supported by scholarship during an intensive full-time period of writing up. Doctoral Information Handbook: see ‘Handbook for Doctoral and Master of Philosophy Degrees’ Doctorate by research: a course where a minimum of two-thirds of its assessable content is by research and the assessment process involves at least one qualified examiner external to the institution. These are requirements of the Australian Government Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST). Doctor of Philosophy (PhD): a course offered by the Faculty of Science. Doctor of Science (DSc): a higher doctorate course offered by the Faculty of Science. DRI: see 'Dean's Research Initiative'. DSc: see 'Doctor of Science'. DVC(R): see 'Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research)'. EFTSU: see 'Equivalent Full Time Student Unit'. English language requirements: international student applicants must satisfy Monash University English language requirements in order to be admitted to a course. Equivalent Full Time Student Unit (EFTSU): a measure of course enrolment load with one EFTSU corresponding to one full-time student undertaking 48 credit points per year. Ethics: see 'Animal ethics' and 'human ethics'. eWater CRC: a CRC with Faculty of Science involvement based in the School of Biological Sciences. Exit Survey: an annual survey of doctoral students undertaken by the Monash Research Graduate School (MRGS). exPERT Program: a series of seminars for research postgraduates coordinated by the Monash Research Graduate School (MRGS) in the categories of exPERT General (employment and research training issues), exPERT IT, and exPERT Stats, basic and advanced statistical workshops on subjects of relevance to research students. Extension to candidature: masters students who have made good progress but are unable to complete within the prescribed maximum time may apply to the 'Research Degrees Committee (RDC)’ for an extension to their candidature. A written application must be made, supported by the supervisor, including documentation of illness or other relevant factors. The total time of extensions may not exceed 12 months. Doctoral students must apply for intermission via the Monash Research Graduate School (MRGS). External candidature: a form of candidature that allows students to undertake research in an approved research site in Australia or in another country where resources and complementary supervision are available. This may include an archives repository, field site, laboratory, commercial or governmental research station, or another university. Students may also have the option to spend some of their time at the Monash University Malaysia campus, if the project allows. Doctoral students apply through the Monash Research Graduate School (MRGS) while masters by research students apply through the Faculty of Science office. External mode candidature: see 'External candidature'. External supervisor: see 'Supervisor'. Faculty of Science Bridging Research Grants: a funding scheme that aims to strengthen the capability and competitiveness of researchers and schools in the Faculty of Science by supporting high quality research proposals that have narrowly missed out on funding in ARC Discovery - Projects and NHMRC Project Grant schemes and thereby help to ensure continuity of expertise and productivity. Faculty of Science Dean's Postgraduate Research Scholarship: a scholarship scheme where schools nominate their highest-ranked unsuccessful applicant for a 'centrally allocated scholarship'. The scholarship provides the same benefits as for an 'Australian Postgraduate Award (APA)' or 'Monash Graduate Scholarship (MGS)'. Faculty of Science Early Career Researcher Grants: a funding scheme to provide seeding funds for junior staff who have yet to develop a strong track record. Faculty of Science International Tuition Fee Scholarship: a scholarship that covers the ‘course tuition fees’ and ‘Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)’ fees for international students who have been awarded a ‘Monash Graduate Scholarship (MGS)’ to undertake a ‘higher degree by research’ within the Faculty of Science, but not a corresponding ‘Monash International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (MIPRS)’ that would have covered their course tuition fees. Students do not apply for this award. Faculty of Science Linkage – Project Application Support (LPAS) scheme: a scheme aimed at assisting staff members in the preparation of applications for ARC Linkage – Projects and thereby increasing the number of applications and improving the success rate. Faculty of Science News Bulletin for Research Staff: a fortnightly newsletter that lists upcoming news and events related to research and current research funding opportunities. Login is required using a 'sci.monash.edu.au' email address. Faculty of Science office: the Faculty of Science office located on the Clayton campus. Faculty of Science Overseas Travel Grants for Academic Staff: a funding scheme for Faculty of Science academic staff to present papers at international research conferences located overseas. Faculty of Science ‘Populate and Publish’ Maternity Leave Grant: a funding scheme that aims to provide assistance to female academics engaged in teaching / research positions who have taken maternity leave by providing an untied grant to be used for any research-related purpose. Faculty of Science Postdoctoral Overseas Travel Grants: a funding scheme for Faculty of Science postdoctoral research fellows to attend international conferences or to conduct short research visits to other overseas research institutions where such activities can be shown to be of benefit to Monash University. Faculty of Science Postgraduate Committee: A committee of faculty research postgraduates. Each school has an elected representative. Faculty of Science Staff International Travel Plan: a travel plan that must be submitted by Faculty of Science staff and postgraduate research students undertaking international travel for their research or university work. Faculty Research Centre: a research centre of the Faculty of Science. Faculty Research Committee (FRC) (login required): a committee of the Faculty of Science that meets to review matters relating to the research activities of the faculty including research grants funding. The committee is convened by the 'Associate Dean (Research)'. Faculty research strengths: research areas of the faculty that are internationally competitive with those of other universities Federation Fellowships: see 'Australian Research Council (ARC)'. Fees: see 'Amenities fee' and 'Course tuition fee'. Financial Resources Management Division (FiRM): a division of the university that provides services, systems, and advice in relation to the management of university resources. FiRM includes the ‘Travel Advisory Office’ and ‘Insurance Services’. FiRM: see ‘Financial Resources Management Division’. Full-time: where a study program for a semester has an ‘EFTSU’ value greater than or equal to 0.375. Students with less are defined as ‘part-time’. Full-time / Part-time is not a reflection of the time of day classes are held. Geosciences : see 'School of Geosciences'. Gippsland campus: a campus of the university located approximately 120km west of Melbourne's central business district. The School of Applied Sciences and Engineering is based at this campus. Go8: see 'Group of 8'. GradCertSciStud: see 'Graduate Certificate in Science Studies'. GradDipSci: see 'Graduate Diploma of Science'. Graduate certificate: a course for which the normal requirement for admission is a ‘bachelor’ degree. Graduate Certificate in Science Studies (GradCertSciStud): a course offered by the Faculty of Science. Graduate diploma: a course for which the normal entry requirement is the completion of a ‘bachelor degree’ or ‘graduate certificate’. Graduate Diploma of Science (GradDipSci): a course offered by the Faculty of Science. Graduate Studies Officer: an employee of the Faculty of Science who is the main contact person for prospective and current masters students enrolled in the faculty. Group of Eight (Go8): a group comprising the vice-chancellors (presidents) of The University of Adelaide, The Australian National University, The University of Melbourne, Monash University, The University of New South Wales, The University of Queensland, The University of Sydney and The University of Western Australia. The Go8 receives over 70 per cent of national competitive research grants and conduct over 60 per cent of all Australian university research. The Monash University Grading Scale defines 'H1' as corresponding to a level of achievement for which an overall mark of 80 per cent or more has been awarded for a whole course. H1 Equivalence: Where an applicant does not hold a minimum qualification of at least a bachelor's degree with first class honours (H1), the faculty will request that the applicant complete an Honours 1 Equivalence Assessment form as an attachment to their application for admission to candidature. H2A: a Second Class Honours, Division 1 degree or equivalent. The Monash University Grading Scale defines 'H2A' as corresponding to a level of achievement for which an overall mark between 70 and 79 per cent has been awarded for a whole course. H2A Equivalence: where an applicant does not hold a minimum qualification of at least a bachelor's degree with upper second class honours (H2A), the faculty will request that the applicant complete an H2A Equivalence form as an attachment to their application for admission. Handbook for Doctoral and Master of Philosophy Degrees: a comprehensive guide covering admission and candidature requirements, supervision, intellectual property, thesis examination procedures, grievance and appeal, facilities and services, and contact details for major administrative bodies of the university. Hargrave-Andrew Library: a branch of the Monash University Library of the university with holdings in biological and physical sciences, engineering, information technology, and medicine and health sciences. The branch is located in Building 30 on the Clayton campus. HDR: see 'Higher degree by research'. HECS: see 'Higher Education Contribution Scheme'. HEP: see ‘higher education provider’. Higher Degree by Research (HDR): a doctoral or masters course that has a research component of 66 per cent or more in accordance with the requirements of the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST). Higher doctorate: a doctorate that is of a higher standing than either a masters degree or the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). The Faculty of Science offers the higher doctorate Doctor of Science (DSc). Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS): an Australian Government funding scheme for tertiary education. Higher education provider (HEP): Honours 'class' or 'grade': Please see the definitions for 'H1', 'H1 Equivalence', 'H2A' and 'H2A Equivalence'. HRG Australia (HRG): the Monash University preferred travel management company for its staff and postgraduate research students. Human ethics: any research involving animals requires ethics approval from the 'Standing Committee on Ethics in Research Involving Humans (SCERH)' of the 'Research Grants and Ethics Branch'. Only after approval by SCERH may the project commence. IGS: see 'Institutional Grants Scheme'. Institutional Grants Scheme (IGS): a scheme that supports the higher education institutions' research and research training activities, and allows them to fund their activities in accordance with their own strategic judgements. This scheme absorbs the funding previously allocated under the Research Quantum and the 'Small Grants Scheme'. Funding under the IGS is allocated on the basis of formula that takes into account each institution's success in attracting research students (30 per cent of funding), in attracting research income (60 per cent) and in the quality and output of its research publications (10 per cent). Intellectual Property (IP): a term that covers a range of legal rights for the protection of creative effort, particularly the protection of economic investment in that creative effort. Intermission: A leave of absence from candidature. International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS): a scholarship administered by the Monash Research Graduate School (MRGS) that covers the 'course tuition fees' set by the university and payable by the awardee for each year of the course. The scholarship also meets the cost of basic 'Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)'. IP: see 'Intellectual Property'. IPRS: see 'International Postgraduate Research Scholarship'. Junior Honorary Research Associate: doctoral students who have submitted their thesis for examination lose their status as a student and are no longer entitled to access libraries and other university services. However, they may apply to be appointed as a Junior Honorary Research Associate for an initial period of no longer than six months that will allow them to have a Monash University Staff identity card with full staff access rights. There is no salary entitlement with this appointment. |
