Monash University Postgraduate Research Scholarships 2008
Monash University offers a range of scholarships each year to students undertaking a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), professional doctorate (not offered in the Faculty of Science) or research masters degree, including the Master of Science (MSc). Approximately 300 stipend awards and 60 course tuition fee scholarships will be offered in 2007 for the 2008 round.
This page gives an outline of the scholarships available and their eligibility requirements, the application process, staff contacts, and links to further information. Please note that a range of scholarships are also offered by the faculty and its schools and centres, details of which are given here.
The deadline for scholarship applications is Wednesday, 31 October 2007 with the Monash Research Graduate School (MRGS).

1. Overview of the scholarships available
The Monash University Postgraduate Research Scholarships 2008 round will cover the following main scholarship schemes:
Stipend scholarships
These awards pay an annual non-taxable allowance for students enrolled on a full-time basis of $20,007 (2008 rate) for up to two (2) years for a research masters (Master of Science (MSc) and up to three (3) years for a doctorate (Doctor of Philosophy, PhD).
Course tuition fee scholarships
These awards cover course tuition fees and basic Overseas Student Health Care (OSHC) for international students for up to two (2) years for a research masters (Master of Science (MSc) by research) and up to three (3) years for a doctorate (Doctor of Philosophy, PhD).
2. Eligibility requirements
Academic qualifications / research experience
Persons who have completed a four year undergraduate degree at H1 level and who wish to undertake a research masters, PhD, or professional doctorate are eligible to apply for Monash University Postgraduate Research Scholarships.
Applicants who do not have a H1 qualification can be nominated for H1 Equivalence by the faculty. These applications will then be considered on a case-by-case basis by a university-wide H1 equivalence panel.
English language
Please note that strict English language proficiency requirements apply. Applicants whose first language is not English will need to undertake a test of English language proficiency.
3. Deadline for applications
The deadline is Wednesday, 31 October 2007 with the Monash Research Graduate School (MRGS).
4. Scholarship application kits
Printed copies
Please contact the relevant school if you would like a copy of the scholarship application guide (which contains the application form). A limited number of copies will also be kept in the Faculty of Science office.
Electronic copies
International applicants may apply using an electronic version of the application form. Please ask your proposed school to make a request for the form as follows:
Procedures for school staff
Please send an email to hdrschol@adm.monash.edu.au that provides the following information:
- Full name of the applicant
- Name of the school
- Email address of the applicant
The MRGS will generate a scholarship application form on its database for the applicant and will email it along with the application guide to the email address provided.

- Friday, 9 November 2007
Faculty of Science review of applications for H1 Equivalence (H1E) by the Associate Dean (Graduate Studies), Dr Tony Patti.
Dr Patti will follow up with School Postgraduate Co-ordinators on any outstanding H1E matters following his review of School’s H1E nominations.
School ranking of applicants

Monash University deadline for scholarship applications (with late fee and head of school support)
Late applications will only be accepted in exceptional circumstances. The Research Graduate School Committee (RGSC) imposes a $50 late fine on all late applications. The head of school will also be requested to provide a letter in support of the application. No applications will be accepted after this date. |

School staff should review the list in accordance with the MRGS ‘Instructions for departments’. Please note the need for applications to be prepared for H1 Equivalence (H1E) where required. Schools should also consider the ranking of their applicants. |
