1. Nomination process
Students do not apply for this award per se. Awardees will be nominated by schools.
To register your interest in being nominated for this scholarship, please contact the relevant staff member on this list.
Nominations may be made at any time throughout the year.

2. Benefits
The scholarship covers the course tuition fee and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) fees for international students who have been awarded a Monash Graduate Scholarship (MGS) (a living allowance scholarship) or equivalent stipend-paying/ living allowance scholarship to undertake a higher degree by research within the Faculty of Science.
The course tuition fee for MSc, MPhil and PhD candidature in the Faculty of Science in 2009 is $27,380 per annum.
Awardees will have details of the scholarship included on their official academic transcript.
3. Eligibility
The Faculty of Science Dean’s International Postgraduate Research Scholarship is offered for full-time research at a HDR level (MSc, MPhil and PhD).
Students who are jointly supervised, on a 50:50 basis, by an MRGS accredited, Clayton-based HDR supervisor/s and another/others based at either the School of Applied Sciences (Gippsland campus), or within another academic unit of another faculty within Monash University, may also be eligible for this award.
In addition, awards will only be available to international students (including those holding a New Zealand permanent residence visa) who:
- are commencing their postgraduate research studies in the Faculty of Science at Monash University;
- have enrolled in a higher degree by research program (MSc, MPhil and PhD) from 1 July 2008; or
- have enrolled in a higher degree by research program prior to 1 July 2008 and are not in receipt of any tuition fee-paying scholarship support; and
- hold H1 or H1 equivalent (H1E) academic qualifications as per http://mrgs.monash.edu.au/scholarships/selection/proc13.html; and
- meet Monash University’s minimum English language proficiency requirements for entry into a higher degree by research program.
Faculty of Science Dean’s International Postgraduate Research Scholarships are not available to those who:
- are not also supported by a Monash University, School, Research Centre, individual research group or externally-funded living allowance scholarship commensurate with the Monash Graduate Scholarship (MGS) stipend rate; and
- have already undertaken postgraduate research studies at doctoral level;
- are already enrolled in a higher degree by research (MSc, MPhil, PhD) and are in receipt of tuition scholarship support from other funding sources;
- have already been enrolled for more than two years in a PhD or one year in research masters (MPhil or MSc) program;
- are unable to secure both a Monash University accredited main and associate (or joint) supervisor willing to accept them for supervision in their research team (for reasons that may pertain to student load restrictions on the supervisor/s, unavailability of required facilities, lack of appropriate expertise to provide supervision, etc.)
4. Tenure of award
The duration of an award will be reduced by any periods of study undertaken towards the degree prior to the commencement of the award or taken during the suspension of the award.
5. Funding / administration of the award
The Faculty of Science arranges payment of the international course tuition fee and the standard Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).
Awardees and their dependants under the age of 18 years are covered for the cost of a standard OSHC policy approved by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing (refer to http://www.health.gov.au/internet/wcms/publishing.nsf/content/health-privatehealth-consumers-oshc.htm for details).
Where students are jointly supervised, on a 50:50 basis, by an MRGS accredited, Clayton-based HDR supervisor/s and another/others based at either the School of Applied Sciences (Gippsland campus), or within another academic unit of another faculty within Monash University; the costs of the international tuition fee and the standard Overseas Student Health Cover will be funded by the Faculty of Science and the other academic unit on a 50:50 cost-sharing basis.
OSHC will be arranged through Medibank Private for new commencing students for the duration of their candidature. Overseas Student Health Cover must be continuous for the entire duration of stay in Australia.
Awardees may wish to purchase extra OSHC if they require cover for ancillary services such as dental, optical, and physiotherapy. The scholarship does not cover the cost of extra OSHC.

6. Conditions of Award
The Conditions of Award are based on those for a Monash International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (MIPRS).
Please note: All recipients of a Faculty of Science Dean’s International Postgraduate Research Scholarship must apply for a Monash University International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (MIPRS) at each end-of-year round for which they are eligible for an MIPRS award.
Unsuccessful applicants for a Monash University International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (MIPRS) who are in receipt of a Faculty of Science Dean’s International Postgraduate Research Scholarship may be nominated, in consultation with their supervisor and school postgraduate co-ordinator, for a mid-year MIPRS, in the next round.
7. Guidelines for acceptance of award / decline of offer
Persons who have been formally offered an award by the Faculty of Science office are asked to follow these steps:
Review the Conditions of Award
Carefully read the Conditions of Award for 2009 (for those commencing the award in 2009), ensuring that you are aware of all conditions and that you have sought clarification from the Faculty of Science Research Office and / or the school where necessary.
Complete the required documents for the scholarship to be activated
Complete and return the following documents to the Faculty of Science office by the date specified on the letter of offer:

8. What happens after I have accepted a scholarship offer?
The Faculty of Science Research Office and / or the school will check the documents and contact you if further information is required.
The Faculty of Science Research Office will arrange payment of the international course tuition fee and the standard Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).
The school, in conjunction with the Faculty Research Office, will assist you with your enrolment into a postgraduate research program (MSc, MPhil or PhD).
9. Scholarship extensions
An extension will normally only be approved where research has been delayed by circumstances beyond the candidate’s control and where such delays could not have been reasonably anticipated at the commencement of candidature. The grounds for an extension must be related to study and not of a personal nature. Masters candidates are not entitled to an extension.
