Area of study: Astronomy
- Astrophysics is the application of known physical laws to the make-up of the universe – planets, stars, comets, pulsars and quasars, black holes and galaxies.
- Modern astrophysics draws extensively on physics, mathematics, computation and numerical analysis, areas which provide training in problem solving.
- Topics include: nuclear physics, elementary particles and stellar
atmospheres; concepts include electromagnetic radiation, optics,
gravity, motion and energy, and relativity.
- Laboratory techniques are undertaken and include radio astronomy,
remote sensing and observational techniques using telescopes,
detectors, space-based systems, IR, UV and X-ray astronomy.
- Monash courses include hands-on experience at Mt Stromlo and
Siding Springs Observatory.
- Monash is home to the Centre for Stellar and Planetary Astrophysics
(CSPA).
