Area of study: Mathematics

  • Mathematics is one of oldest scientific disciplines and the basis for most modern science and engineering. It encompasses the study of algebraic, analytical and numerical structures and their applications, the development of quantitative methods, including statistical analysis and the development and application of mathematical models across a broad range of areas of science.
  • Applied mathematicians use mathematics for obtaining practical solutions to concrete problems. Pure mathematicians deal first and foremost with the ideal, the beauty of perfection.
  • The quantitative and problem-solving skills that are learned from the study of mathematics are crucial in most scientific and technology based disciplines, as well as in most of the wide range of careers undertaken by science graduates.
  • The completion of a major sequence of mathematics can lead to careers in theoretical or applied mathematics, or mathematical statistics, and is an important part of the preparation for a wide range of careers for which mathematical and computational skills are needed.
