Area of study: Materials science
- This field looks at materials such as metals, polymers, ceramics, glasses and composites and the fundamental structural reasons for the astounding range of properties displayed and the relationships between them.
- The structure, wear of materials, fabrication and service are studied.
- Diverse aspects are covered such as structural assembly, interfaces and surfaces, casting, coating atmospheric attack and friction and wear.
- Structured laboratory exercises are undertaken to illustrate aspects of the science and to provide some personal, “hands-on” experiences in these areas.
- There is a demand for expertise in this field by government and private research, manufacturing and technology-based consulting.
