Area of study: Meteorology

  • Meteorology encompasses the weather, climate and related environmental issues, examining phenomena ranging from the microscopic to the climate of the entire planet and with time scales from the split second to the millennia of an ice age.
  • Meteorology and studying weather and climate has economic benefits through its ability to forecast both severe weather such as cyclones, and daily weather for airports and agriculture
  • Meteorology is an interdisciplinary field with contributions from the physical sciences, life sciences, geosciences, and importantly, mathematics.
  • Using some of the most powerful computers available, mathematics allows us to provide daily weather forecasts and investigate the effect of human activities on climate change. Complex atmospheric phenomena such as El Nino, Southern Oscillation or tropical cyclones can be better understood through mathematical models.
  • The discipline offers a balance of field work, data analysis, theoretical research and new techniques in modelling, and a variety of work and research opportunities.
  • Monash has a strong research presence in this field and is home to the Centre for Dynamical Meteorology and Oceanography (CDMO).
