"On the job training and fieldwork are a major plus for any geologist."
My role at Esso Australia where I have worked for seven years, is to use various data sets (seismic surveys, surface geology, oil well results, remote sensing/aerial photography), and interpret subsurface geological structures which may contain oil or gas. The photo on the right shows me analysing sedimentary rocks from a petroleum basin, with a backdrop of seismic data on the wall behind me. I have worked in a variety of geological settings (from offshore basins in Bass Strait to onshore settings, such as in the Papua New Guinean Highlands).
This variety and quality of data available, the team focused approach, and the use of cutting edge technology make for a very rewarding work environment. The opportunity to develop creative scientific ideas and routinely test them in an active exploration drilling program is the most enjoyable aspect (and biggest challenge) of my work. On the job training and fieldwork are also a major plus for any geologist (see photo below, taken in Utah, USA - I'm the guy in the black hat in the middle of the group).
Many of the aspects I enjoy in my work, were fostered at Monash; iIntellectual creativity, availability of some of the latest technology, friendly team environment, and geological field work. My supervisor (Professor Ray Cas) always supported me. There was also departmental support for fieldwork (essential to geological studies). All in all, my time at Monash was not only enjoyable, but provided me with many useful skills for my current employment.
