"The diverse and yet, relevant subjects offered during my Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology) degree at provided me with the various career possibilities I could have..."
After graduating from Monash University in Australia, I returned to Malaysia to look for a job. Within less than a month, I was offered the post of a biotechnologist in one of the two only private Malaysian medical biotechnology companies (i.e. CryoCord Sdn Bhd), which specializes in cord blood banking and stem cells research. My job responsibilities require me to perform all laboratory processes pertaining to cord blood freezing and storage. Besides that, I was required to keep the company updated and recommend (if necessary) the most current international industry regulations and practices. Recently, I was involved and part of the company’s strategic team that helped the company in becoming the first Malaysian medical biotechnology company to acquire the ISO9001:2000 accreditation for stem cells banks. Stem cell research is one of the most important and promising areas of medical research, as stem cells are believed to offer potential cures and therapies for many devastating diseases, such as leukaemia, Alzheimer’s disease, etc. There are many challenges ahead as these stem cell therapies continue to reveal enormous possibilities in transforming the practice of medicine and improving the quality and length of life.
The diverse and yet, relevant subjects offered during my Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology) degree at provided me with the various career possibilities I could have, whether it was in the environmental, medical, food technology, or other types of industry. With that, I went on to pursue an Honours degree in order to improve myself further with better research skills and knowledge needed in working in a laboratory independently or in teams. While studying at Gippsland Campus, I really enjoyed having insightful discussions with my supervisors and course mates regarding the research studies that I had to do. At the end of the program, I decided I wanted to continue to do research work and believed that I was well equipped with all the basic skills and knowledge needed in pursuing my career.
