"I enjoy helping staff members to solve problems within the mill processes."

As a Laboratory Technician (Industrial Chemist), my job involves several major tasks:

  • Analysis of mill effluent's for the purpose of monitoring for EPA requirements.
  • Analysis of pulp and paper for quality and customer issues.
  • Analysis of deposits/substances for the purpose of problem solving in various pulp mills and paper machines.
  • Preparation of bulk chemicals used in the paper making process.

Challenges associated with my position include:

  • Completing allocated analyses by a set time to submit a monthly report for the EPA and General Manager.
  • Meeting deadlines for work requests submitted by internal customers (staff in pulp mills and paper machines etc.) which involve analysis of various samples from mill processes. By doing this I enjoy helping these staff members to solve problems within the mill processes.

The mill effluent samples require a wide variety of specific routines analyses which provide valuable information to the Environmental Manager and EPA as a preventative measure to breaches of our license. Pulp and paper samples require quality checks to ensure our external customers (businesses that buy our paper products) are receiving products of suitable specifications to meet their needs.

At Monash Gippsland, I enjoyed doing the practical experimental work, and then using learned formulae and calculation techniques to obtain meaningful results. This is what I do in my position in the laboratory at Australian Paper Maryvale.
