Off-campus graduate

Jan Beasley
Laboratory manager

Bachelor of Science, Monash University

Jan Beasley

I work in a School Science department initially as the Laboratory technician but now as the Laboratory manager. It is through my studies that I have achieved this promotion. The new responsibility has been a welcome challenge. I have complete job satisfaction and as a result of my studies I have been able to expand my job to include extra responsibility in areas of interest.

My TAFE studies in the late 1990’s stimulated my thirst for knowledge and increased my self-esteem sufficiently to enable me to enrol in a degree course in science. I have made many new friends from different backgrounds, interests, ages and geographical locations.

The residential schools have been great fun. Although you have to work consistently throughout to complete the work required, there is time to consult with lecturers and fellow students to help your understanding.

Already working in a science field, my study has allowed me to expand my contribution thus increasing my job satisfaction. I am able to participate in discussions and my colleagues value the more current knowledge that I can contribute.

Studying science has influenced my life by making me more knowledgeable of what is happening in the world.

By studying off campus I have been able to work full time, be a mother and a wife as well as pursue my personal goal of gaining an undergraduate degree. I have been able to juggle my time so that I can accommodate all the requirements of each role. The friendships I have made over my studies have also become very important to me. I have kept in touch with some of my fellow students just as you would, had you been on campus.

When looking for the degree course that offered the subjects that interested me, Monash provided this. I live in NSW so studying off campus was the only way that I could achieve my goal. Family and work commitments meant that I could not move. By studying off campus all members of my family were able to continue as before and I was not prevented from achieving my goal.
