Course structure
Over the three years of the degree students complete:
- A total of 24 units
- Four units each semester or eight units per year
- At least one major science area of study
- At least one minor science area of study
- Two breadth units
- Either at least one unit is taken from each of physical, life and earth processes known as the three ‘PLE’ groups, or at least three level-one science sequences in different areas of study
- Remaining units from science or another faculty (up to a major) that can help broaden knowledge and include special interests
Students are required to complete an approved combination of level one units to ensure breadth of studies across science disciplines. The breadth areas of study include the following.

Life processes: biology, psychology
Earth sciences: atmospheric science, geosciences, geography

Contact time at the university for a BSc is approximately 25 hours per week depending on disciplines studied. Typically, students attend two to three lectures per week per unit of study as well as laboratory classes, tutorials and workshops. Some units also involve field trips.
