Unsatisfactory Academic Progress

End-of-year 2009 Academic Progress

The Notice of Referral

If your academic performance is deemed unsatisfactory after a release of semester two 2009 results, you will be asked by the Faculty Academic Progress Committee to respond  to a Notice of Referral and Hearing as to why you should not be excluded from your faculty. This means that you will be asked to explain in writing why your results were unsatisfactory. If you are sent such a letter, you will be expected to reply by 4:00pm on Wednesday, 6 January 2010 and to make yourself available to attend a hearing of the Faculty's Academic Progress Committee between 19 –21 January 2010

If some of your results are not finalised due to being granted deferred examination(s) or having results withheld, you must insure that you complete any work for which you received a withheld grade, and sit any deferred examinations on the date required. If you do not pass one or more of these units you may have failed to meet the faculty academic progress requirements and therefore may be referred to the second round of academic progress hearings. In such case, you will be expected to respond to the Notice of Referral by 12:00 noon on Tuesday, 3 March 2010.

You will be expected to make yourself available to attend a hearing of the faculty Academic Progress Committee on Friday, 12 March 2010.

It is important that you respond to the Notice of Referral by the designated date. Failure to do so may result in exclusion from the Faculty of Science.

You can get help to prepare your response

Access the Community Services website to find out how to best prepare your response to the Notice of Referral. Also seek advice from the Student Rights officers.

If you think you may have failed the faculty's progress rules and have not received any documentation by mail, make sure you check your student email account to see if you have been sent an email from the faculty asking you to respond to a 'Notice of Referral and Hearing'. If this is the case contact your faculty on your home campus.

Your postal address

If you expect to be away from your normal postal address during December, January or February, you must provide the University with a postal address where you can be contacted during this period. It is your responsibility to ensure the University has your current postal address at all times. Failure to receive university notices will not be accepted as a ground for appeal against exclusion. Update your postal address via WES.

What happens next?

The Academic Progress Committee considers your written response to the Notice of Referral and the factors affecting your studies. The committee then makes a decision that in their belief would be the best way forward for you. This could be one of the following:

  • allow you to continue your studies with recommendations that would help you perform successfully
  • invite you to attend a hearing

The Hearing

If you are invited to attend the hearing, the Faculty  Academic Progress Committee will hear your case, and make one of the following decisions:

  • permit you to continue your studies with recommendations,
  • permit you to continue your studies,  with  a condition placed on your enrolment, or
  • exclude you from any course of the faculty.

You can get help to prepare for your hearing

Access the Community Services website to find out first hand what to expect if you are asked attend a hearing and how to best prepare for it.
