Practical Skills to Find Work

The hidden job market

Finding jobs that have not been advertised is what the Hidden Job Market is all about. There is consensus amongst recruiters that many jobs are available outside of formal recruitment practices. Tap into the potential job opportunities in this segment of the market by using the following techniques.

Referral

This could be a good time to phone a friend.  Employers can often be reassured by a referral system based on existing employees recommending (i.e. referring) a friend or colleague as a person that would fit well into a job role or organisation. Simply asking people to keep an eye out for you can open doors to opportunities so even if it seems like a long shot it still happens regularly.

Networking

Your career network may initially include people you already know – family, friends, academic associates and work colleagues.  As you make effort to reach professional outcomes your network is likely to expand.  Effective networks operate on a principle of sharing information over a period of time and therefore tend to last longer than one meeting.  A further expectation is shared responsibility for building the relationship and bringing benefits to all the members.
