Employers and the Labour MarketOverview of the labour marketJobs in science are competitive and will be influenced by many factors including government policy, the state of the economy, social movements, technological innovations, knowledge developments and research advancements. In recent years the growth of science knowledge and skills has resulted in more jobs in science and greater diversity in the nature of roles available. The rewards gained by graduates working in science include high levels of job satisfaction, opportunities to continue further study, lower rates of UE than the national average and having salaries in the top 20% of working people in their age group. On the flip side you should be aware that project work is common and some fields of science have only a small number of employers which means the opportunities for job mobility are limited. A notable employment outcome for science graduates is that up to 40% will pursue non-science related professional work, using the skills they gained in tertiary education to build a career in an alternative field to the one they studied. Along with changing patterns of work hours you can expect to accomplish a career across a number of job roles and industry sectors.
