Completing these exercises has probably involved some identification of skills that you would like to improve. There are many ways to address skills gaps and build your confidence in applying for jobs.
How can I identify my skill gaps?
Indicators may be obvious ones such as a lack of relevant qualifications in a field or they may relate more to how confident you feel in the application of your skills. You can check for skills gaps by considering the following:
- Self appraisal - what are you good at?/ what do you need to improve in to do the jobs you want to do?
- Lack of work experience
- No opportunity to date to do a specific task or activity
- Competency based testing or assessment
- Feedback from others
- No job offers, no job interviews
- Review of job advertisements – lack knowledge of occupations and industry
What can I do to improve?
Some plans to change your level of skills may be quick to implement, others need to be undertaken over longer periods of time. Some will be easy to access; others require you to be more strategic in your approach. Consider the following as ways to address skill gaps and determine the best method for you.
- Find employment
- Course related
- Part-time, casual
- Become a volunteer or do community activities
- Access information – read, attend seminars/conferences, undertake some research via the web
- Talk to people – speak to an expert or a person working in the profession of your choice to build your knowledge of industries and occupations
- Find a mentor
- Complete a short course, do additional training, consider further study
- Self learn – seek new experiences to challenge yourself
- Look for professional and personal development opportunities
