Practical Skills to Find Work

If you miss out on a job

It happens to most of us at some stage and although it can be disappointing it is important not to view it as personal rejection.  One of the ways to reduce the impact is to be continually active in your job search.

Other things that can help you work on improving your applications are:

  • Reflect on what you did - can you improve in any area?  e.g. written applications, interview performance.  At the same time reflect on the things that you did well eg if you got to interview your application/resume writing skills must be up to standard
  • Are you targeting the right jobs/employers?  e.g.  Are there opportunities with smaller, medium sized employer groups that you haven’t yet explored?
  • Change job search strategy if it isn’t working for you.  Relying on just one method reduces your chances of identifying other options
  • Talk over issues with a careers counsellor.  Sometimes it is difficult to pinpoint why your efforts are not working and a discussion may introduce you to some new ways of thinking
  • Review your goals – are they still realistic?
  • Keep it in perspective – things can happen in labour markets that you cannot control – try to be flexible and open to other opportunities

If you rely on succeeding in only one application you may be overlooking other good opportunities.  Being targeted in job seeking doesn’t necessarily mean applying only to your preferred employer groups.  It means having some clarity around career goals but also being sufficiently open to alternative ways of entering a field of work.

Once your job search commences, you will find a number of things can happen all in the same week.  You might be attending interviews, participating in assessment centres and continuing to forward applications for newly advertised job opportunities.  It can get really quite hectic so keeping good records of the results of your job applications can be a good aid.
