Complementary studyComplementary Study is when you study a unit(s) at another Australian university as part of your Monash degree. You can do this if the unit(s) is/are not offered by Monash University. What can be approved?Complementary study is normally only approved where the unit(s) selected is/are not offered by Monash University and you can demonstrate that there is significant educational advantage that cannot be derived by studying Monash units. For more details about enrolment and credit for complementary study, please refer to the faculty and the university policy. Notification of approval and enrolmentYou will be advised of the outcome of your application in writing. You will then be asked to add the complementary studies unit/s to your Monash science course enrolment by completing and lodging an Enrolment Amendment form with the Faculty of Science Student Services Office by the Friday of the second week of the semester in which the unit is to be taught. Complementary study units in Science will be recorded on your academic transcript with SCL codes (i.e. SCL1001). In order to plan the following year’s proposed course of study, re-enrolling students should try to submit their applications prior to or during the re-enrolment period. ImportantYou must also contact the institution that offers the unit(s) you propose to study and complete any appropriate application and enrolment processes. If you are applying for a CSP place at the other institution they will require confirmation of your student status - to get this you will need to request a short letter from the Student Services Centre. Please note, deadlines at different institutions do vary. Do not assume that the host institution will accept your application just because you met the Monash deadline. Check with the host institution before applying. What if I need to change my complementary studies enrolment?Due to changes in your study plan or changes to unit offerings at Monash or the host institution you may need to amend or discontintue your enrolment after you have enrolled. DiscontinuingIt is important that you remember that standard census dates apply to units undertaken as complementary study. If you are discontinuing your complementary study you must do so at both Monash and the other institution to avoid fees and fail grades. You will need to discontinue your Monash complementary (SCL) units by using an Enrolment Amendment form as you will not be able to discontinue those units via WES. Amending your enrolmentTo change units at another institution you must submit a new complementary studies application so we can assess whether the unit(s) are appropriate replacements for your course. Please make a note on the form that this is a replacement unit. You will need to meet any deadlines that the other University advertises as well as standard variation to enrolment deadlines with Monash (i.e. end of second week of semester). ResultsOnce you have completed your complementary study you must provide the Faculty of Science with original or certified evidence of your result which will then be entered against the special complementary unit codes. If you pass the unit the result will be entered against special complementary codes as SFR (satisfied Faculty requirements). If you fail the unit a Fail (N) result will be entered. If you do not provide the result in a timely fashion (i.e. within the same calendar year as your study), a fail (N) result will be entered. FeesIf you are a CSP student and wish to undertake complementary study at another institution you will be charged at the same CSP rate you are currently on, i.e. either up-front or deferred. International or full-fee students will be charged whatever the single unit current fee is at the host institution. You will receive a Fees Statement from Monash University in which the complementary study units will be included. You will pay for these units at the same time as any other Monash fees are due. |
