Bachelor of Science First Year Requirements - 2010

First year Bachelor of Science students at Clayton and Gippsland campuses must satisfy each of the three requirements:

  • One of the following mathematics or statistics units: SCI1020, STA1010, MTH1020, MTH1030, MTH1055 or MTH1085
  • Three level one approved science sequences in different areas of study, or one unit from each of the physical, life or earth science groups of units.
  • At least 36 points of science units at level one

When making your unit choices you should also plan your choice of major and minor sequence and areas of study

1.  You must complete at least one of the following mathematics or statistics units
SCI1020 – Introduction to statistical reasoning (no prerequisites)
STA1010 – Statistical methods for science (Requires VCE Mathematical Methods 3 & 4)
MTH1020 – Analysis of change (Requires VCE Mathematical Methods 3 & 4 or MTH1010)
MTH1030 – Techniques for modelling (Requires VCE Specialist Mathematics 3 & 4 or MTH1020)
MTH1055 – Mathematics A (Requires MAT1055)
MTH1085 – Mathematics B (Requires MTH1055)

The unit(s) taken will depend on your mathematics background and interests:

The statistics units SCI1020 and STA1010 are normally recommended for students planning to study areas where experimental design and data analysis skills are particularly important, such as the life sciences. The mathematical methods units MTH1020, MTH1030 (Clayton), MTH1055 and MAT1085 (Gippsland) are recommended for students with an interest in mathematics and/or physics.

Students must complete the mathematics/statistics requirement at stage one before enrolling in level-two science units. Note: Your selected major and minor sequences may already cover this requirement

2.  An approved combination of level-one units to ensure breadth across science disciplines.

Students can satisfy the breadth requirement in one of two ways:

Option 1.  By taking at least three level-one sequences from the list below

Astronomy ASP1010 and ASP1022
Atmospheric science ATM1020 and ATM1030
Biological sciences BIO1011 and BIO1022, or BIO1011 and BIO1042, or BIO1711 and BIO1722
Chemistry

(CHM1011 or CHM1031) and (CHM1022 or CHM1042)

Note: students who wish to complete a major sequence in chemistry must complete CHM1022
Computer science FIT1002 and FIT1008 (only students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science at Clayton campus), or FIT1001 and FIT1002 (only students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science at Gippsland campus)
Environmental science ENV1711 and ENV1722
Geosciences ESC1011 and ESC1022
Geography GES1070 and GES1020, or GES1070 and GES1050
Mathematics MTH1020 and MTH1030, or MTH1030 and MTH2010, or MTH1030 and (one of MTH1112, STA1010 or MTH1122), or MTH1055 and MTH1085
Physics

(PHS1011 or PHS1080 or PHS1031) and (PHS1022 or PHS1042)

Note: students who wish to complete a minor or major sequence in Physics must complete PHS1022
Psychology PSY1011 and PSY1022

Option 2.  By taking at least one unit from each of the following three groups:

Physical process ASP1010, ASP1022, CHM1011, CHM1031, CHM1042, CHM1022, MSC1010, PHS1011, PHS1022, PHS1031, PHS1042, PHS1080PHS1722
Life process BIO1011, BIO1022, BIO1042, BIO1711, BIO1722, PSY1011, PSY1022
Earth process ATM1020, ATM1030, ESC1011, ESC1022, ENV1711, ENV1722, GES1070GES1020GES1050

Note: You should complete a second unit in at least one of the three processes to start your chosen science area of study. Areas of study are located in the University handbook.

3.  At least 36 points of science units at level one.
