Enrolment and re-enrolment

Monash Exchange Studies and Study Abroad Program

A student enrolled in a Monash University course can attend an overseas university as an Exchange or Study Abroad student and receive credit towards their Monash degree.

Exchange Program

Monash University has exchange partnership with more than 120 universities in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, North and South America and Africa.  If there is an exchange agreement between Monash University and the host university then students pay tuition fees at Monash University.  Both local and international students are eligible to spend a semester or two on exchange.

Study Abroad

If Monash University does not have an exchange partnership with an overseas university students can apply to enrol as a study abroad student.  Study abroad students are required to pay tuition fees (single unit fees) at the host overseas institution.  Students are eligible to apply for a grant through the Monash Abroad office.

To apply for an Exchange or Study Abroad Program, a Monash Abroad application form MUST be obtained from the Monash Abroad office.

General Information about Study Abroad and Exchange Programs

Generally, students need good academic results (average of credit or above), must have completed at least one year of their course when submitting an application and need to maintain a full-time load per semester (18-24 credit points).  Students who complete a semester or two abroad receive a full credit transfer and a transcript from their host university.  Students must be enrolled in both institutions and the Faculty of Science MUST approve any changes to a student’s enrolment before amending their enrolment at the host institution.

Monash abroad hold an information session every Wednesday between 1pm and 2 pm.  Students are strongly advised to attend this session for general information.

Steps for applying for an Exchange or Study Abroad Program
Step 1
Step2
  • If applying on an exchange or study abroad basis, complete a Monash Abroad application form obtained from Monash International.
  • Determine which Overseas University you wish to attend and whether Monash has an exchange partnership with the institution. This will determine whether you can apply as an exchange or study abroad student:
Step 3
  • Once the university has been decided, you will need to choose the units you wish to study that will count towards your degree at Monash.
  • These units need to be assessed by relevant school or department for credit towards your Monash Science degree.
  • The Faculty will require a detailed unit outline, credit points, assessment and contact hours for each unit, and information from the host university about how many credit points make up a full-time load.
  • A Proposed Unit Credit Assessment sheet needs to be attached to each unit outline and taken by the student to the relevant school or department for unit approval.  This form can only be obtained from the Faculty of Science office.
Step4
  • Once the School or Department has assessed and approved your units, you MUST contact the Faculty of Science office to seek final approval for your proposed study plan and to ensure the chosen units will count towards your Monash science degree and that you are enrolled in a full-time load.
  • Exchange students then take their completed Monash Abroad Application form to Monash Abroad for further processing.
Step 5

If you are enrolled into a double degree program, you must seek approval from both Faculties on the Monash Abroad Application form.
